Our Story
Founder Story
Hi! I'm Kristen.
I'm a quirky mom of two incredible kids and a lover of personal connection, doing crafts, and proper RSVP protocol. I studied psychology in my undergrad, which has since blossomed into a HR career. Despite being someone who often plays it safe, I have jumped headfirst into the throes of entrepreneurship by creating a baby product that I am absolutely obsessed with.
Two and half years ago on a tired postpartum day...
I was doing so much for my new baby, but I regularly worried about everything I wasn’t doing to support his development... from getting him to sleep and eat enough, to making it to the frequent doctor appointments, to tummy time, to showing him black-and-white high-contrast images. I was super prone to that dreaded mom guilt, constantly feeling like I wasn’t doing enough.
And then I had a thought!
Oh! It would be so much easier to show my baby the black and white images that support his development if they were right inside the car seat cover. That way, I could be doing something helpful while we were on the go. I searched online, switching up keywords, but nothing came up. Search after search, still nothing. Was this actually my first original idea? I sat on it for over a year before finally taking steps to turn it into the product we have now.
Creation of the Product
From creating an official business, researching manufacturers, and deciding which icons to feature, to making and approving samples, everything was new to me. I even dusted off my old psychology research skills from undergrad to really understand the science behind it all. And now, we have it: an adorable, easy-to-use, guilt-reducing black and white car seat and nursing cover.
Big Thanks To...
While I don’t have official employees yet, Contrast Baby has been built with the help of so many generous and talented people.
From my husband, Trevor’s, constant support and love, to my amazing artists Maggie and Lauren, who brought the characters and icons to life, to my manufacturer, photographers, friends, and fellow entrepreneurs—thank you for your guidance, creativity, and encouragement every step of the way.
